2021 Canada Seniors Day

10/30/2021

Yubo

On Friday we made some preparations for today’s volunteer service. About Canada National Seniors Day, we came to Vancouver from Richmond, and it took a lot of time.  There were already quite a few people on the scene, which made people feel a little confused.  We check the vaccination status of the people attending the festival and provide help to them, but there are some difficulties and some people are impatient.  We distribute flyers about our songs, hoping that they can sing with us. Although some people don't seem interested in our program, some people will sing with us.  We ended our volunteer activities at about two o’clock and it took a long time before we returned to Richmond.

There was quite a lot of prep work before attending the Senior Appreciation Event including practicing the song that we were to perform through zoom (as I was stuck in Surrey). Today, my mother and I made our way over to Vancouver from Surrey which took a considerable amount of time. We arrived at the venue quite late at around 11:00 AM, at which point a portion of the food had already been served and many guests had already made their statements. Some of the esteemed guests that I recall include an MP of Saskatchewan, a director of Security Operations within BC, and an important member of the cultural diversity group that hosted the event. The event was packed with people and performances which helped the jovial environment. At the event, specifically I helped with verifying the vaccination records of guests and providing assistance to those who arrived. As well, I helped handing out fliers of sorts promoting others to sing along to our song. The song was a bit of a letdown but it was a nice gesture either way. I left with a couple others at around 2 in the afternoon which was basically the end of the ceremony.

The event was enjoyable, but could use some improvements. There wasn’t much to do at the event, but it was ok overall. The food was a bit on the “meh” side, but the performances were really, really well organized and entertaining. Unfortunately, some people were quite rude coming into the event, but most of the guests were friendly. Overall, the experience was enjoyable, but there are quite a few spots that could’ve been improved. One thing that I found really well organized were the numerous performances and the award distributions, those were really well organized and carried out.

On Oct. 30, 2021, I went to Fuda Seafood Restaurant to volunteer. At first, my mission was to check other customers’ QR code. I stood at the entrance of the restaurant, waiting for the guests to enter. I used my phone to scan their COVID vaccine codes. My partner was Mia. Her task was to let the customers fill out the guests’ emergency contact form. Mia and I were hard-working. Although we were tired as we stood at the entrance for a long time, we tried our best to complete our tasks. We were very polite to each guest. Also, we helped people to guide the directions in the building, such as the direction to the activity location and the way to the restroom.
Next, the kids, the teacher and I were waiting in the restaurant, and we were ready to perform. We were prepared to sing together on the stage. The song was called “You Are My Sunshine”. I was holding the lyrics sheet. A man made a hand gesture to us, and we walked confidently onto the stage. On the stage, we stood in a horizontal line. The audience’s attention immediately turned to us. I felt a little bit nervous, but I was confident with myself since I practiced this song a lot before the performance. The accompaniment music started, and we began to sing. The voice we produced was in harmony. The music was light and bright. After we finished singing, we bowed. I could hear the applause from the audience. I felt so proud of myself. Afterwards, I received the volunteer certificate. I learned a lot today. For example, I improved my communication skills. I enjoy singing on the stage. I had a memorable volunteer experience.
